After its official inauguration at Salone di Milano came Venice, Montreal and now Miami. From December 4th 2017 to January 14th 2018, the Miami Design District, Paradise Plaza is hosting an exhibition set to travel all around the world until 2020, from Asia to north America, via the middle East and Europe. The exhibition is centred around 40 artistic creations, veritable icons of 21st century French design.
How did this selection take place? Thanks to the work of a committee uniting 40 internationally acclaimed professionals from the world of art and creativity, including the curator of MOMA, an Indian designer, a philosopher and numerous designers. Together they devised a list of ten values which characterise French design: art de vivre, elegance and luxury, cultural openness, tradition, savoir-faire, audacity, panache (fantasy and originality), innovation, balance and creativity.
The stylist Jean - Charles de Castelbajac was entrusted with scenography, developing an elegant and poetic setting, capable of highlighting French art de vivre.
As stated in the title, there really is no place for bad taste in French design. As confirmation we have the Ploum sofa by the Bouroullec brothers for Ligne Roset, along with the suspended lamp Vertigo by Costance Guisset for Petite Friture, selected by Olivier Gabet. In discussing selected products, the director of the Paris Museum of Decorative Arts explains: "the French touch is that small detail which makes all the difference, making us envied abroad". The philosopher and sociologist Gilles Lipovetsky proposes the chair Palais Royal, designed byJean Michel Wilmotte for Fermob. He discusses just how measured French design is, and how it is capable of discovering new forms of balance to counter waste.
